Why is my WordPress site down for maintenance?  

WordPress can get stuck in maintenance mode during a scheduled WordPress update or when you're updating a bunch of plugins or themes. If WordPress is interrupted during this process, it doesn't have the chance to take your site out of maintenance resulting in locking down your site and making it unavailable.
